How to Find Notion Tasks Without a Due Date

An empty deadline can mean two different things: nobody has confirmed when the work is due, or the work genuinely has no deadline. A useful review view helps you tell the difference.

This setup uses your existing task database. You will create a small queue of unfinished tasks without a due date, then decide what each task actually needs.

Keep planned work separate from deadlines

Use Planned Date for the day you intend to work on a task and Due Date for the commitment it must meet. Add both as Date properties if your workflow needs both. Use a Done checkbox for this example.

A task can be planned for Tuesday without having a deadline. Another can have a Friday deadline while you have not decided when to work on it. These are different questions. The task inbox guide handles unscheduled work; this view handles missing deadlines.

1. Create a deadline review view

  1. Open the database that already contains your tasks.
  2. Add a Table view named No due date.
  3. Open the view settings and choose Filter.
  4. Combine Due Date is empty and Done is unchecked with AND.
  5. Show Name, Planned Date, Due Date and Done so you can inspect the reason each record appears.

If you use Status instead of a checkbox, exclude every status you treat as completed. Do not add a second completion field just to follow this example. Check your AND and OR filter logic if finished tasks still appear.

2. Test the view with four contrasting records

Task Planned Date Due Date Done In this view?
Collect visual references Assigned Empty No Yes
Confirm proposal deadline Empty Empty No Yes
Submit client proposal Empty Assigned No No
Send meeting summary Empty Empty Yes No

The reference task stays visible even though you scheduled it. The proposal with a confirmed deadline is excluded even though it is unscheduled. This small test catches the common mistake of filtering Planned Date when you meant Due Date.

3. Review the reason the deadline is empty

For each visible task, ask: Is somebody expecting this by a specific date? If yes, confirm that date and enter it. If the deadline is unknown, record the question in the task and assign a next action such as “Ask client to confirm delivery date.” Do not invent a delivery commitment to make the queue smaller.

If the task is optional research, leave the deadline empty. You can still schedule a work session through Planned Date. For a larger database, add a Select property called Deadline Review with “Needs clarification” and “No deadline required.” This is an optional editorial label, not a built-in Notion feature.

After reviewing the existing records, you can narrow the queue further: Due Date is empty AND Done is unchecked AND Deadline Review is not “No deadline required.” Test an unlabelled record before relying on the revised filter.

4. Add the review to your weekly routine

Spend a few minutes on the queue before selecting work for your weekly planner. Confirm commitments first, then choose realistic work sessions. A genuine deadline belongs in Due Date; a personal intention belongs in Planned Date.

Keep the broader No due date view available as an audit. It lets you revisit optional work without mixing every undated item into your urgent task list.

Common mistakes

  • Giving everything today’s date. This creates artificial urgency and makes real deadlines harder to identify.
  • Treating empty as overdue. Without a deadline there is no date to compare against today.
  • Moving records into another database. Keep the source record and use a view; copying tasks creates competing versions.
  • Changing the wrong field. Adding Planned Date will not remove a task from a view filtered on Due Date.

Frequently asked questions

Can a task have a planned date without a due date?

Yes. Planned Date records when you intend to work; Due Date records a deadline. Keep optional work undated when no delivery commitment exists.

Are tasks without a due date overdue?

No. An empty deadline cannot establish that a task is overdue. Review it to find out whether a deadline needs to be confirmed.

Why does a scheduled task still appear in this view?

The view checks Due Date, not Planned Date. Scheduling work does not fill its deadline property.

Do I have to assign a deadline to every task?

No. Confirm real commitments and leave optional work without a deadline. Use a review label if you need to distinguish deliberate blanks from unanswered questions.
