How to Show the Earliest Task Deadline on a Notion Project

A project has several task deadlines. You want one date on the project that summarizes the earliest recorded deadline among its related tasks.

This guide builds that summary and checks its limits. An earliest-date rollup can include completed tasks; it does not automatically identify the next unfinished action.

What you will build

A project property called Earliest Recorded Task Deadline. The name deliberately describes its inputs: all tasks included in the chosen relation.

1. Check the task connection and date field

Use your existing Tasks and Projects sources. Tasks needs a Project relation and a Date property called Due Date. Projects needs the corresponding relation containing its tasks.

If the counterpart is missing, use the two-way relation guide. For this introductory example, use single, date-only deadlines rather than date ranges.

2. Prepare a small test project

Create a fictional project and assign these three tasks. Select actual dates with the same order as the example.

Example inputs: the earliest date is not necessarily unfinished work.
Task Due Date Done
Confirm brief 4 November 2026 Checked
Prepare draft 8 November 2026 Unchecked
Review final copy 12 November 2026 Unchecked

The expected earliest recorded deadline is 4 November 2026. The completed task remains part of the related input set.

3. Configure the rollup

  1. In Projects, add a Rollup property.
  2. Name it Earliest Recorded Task Deadline.
  3. Select the relation containing the project’s tasks.
  4. Select Due Date as the related property.
  5. Choose Earliest date as the calculation.
  6. Check the result against the three related test tasks.

Notion lists Earliest date among its date rollup calculations.

4. Change one input and restore it

On the fictional Confirm brief task, change 4 November to 15 November. The earliest result should become 8 November. Restore the original deadline; the result should return to 4 November.

If the summary does not respond, inspect the selected relation, selected date property and connected task pages. Use the rollup troubleshooting guide before rebuilding the calculation.

5. Check missing dates separately

Add a fourth task called Confirm image selection and leave Due Date empty. That task has no recorded deadline to contribute to the earliest date.

Create a task view filtered to Project contains the fictional project AND Due Date is empty. Decide whether the task needs a deadline. Do not assign a date just to make the register appear complete.

A populated rollup does not establish that all related work has been scheduled.

6. Build a separate queue for unfinished work

If your actual question is “What unfinished task is due next?”, use a linked task view on the project page:

  • Project contains this project.
  • Done is unchecked.
  • Due Date is not empty.
  • Sort Due Date ascending.

With the original example, Prepare draft is first in that queue while the rollup still shows 4 November. Both can be correct because they summarize different input sets.

The project task dashboard guide walks through the linked view. Keep the missing-date review alongside it.

Pair the date summary with a count of related tasks without due dates to see gaps in the recorded inputs.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the summary Next deadline while it still includes completed tasks.
  • Assuming a filtered task view changes the rollup’s related input set.
  • Reading a populated date as evidence that every task has a deadline.
  • Replacing the agreed project delivery date with this task summary.

Frequently asked questions

Does Earliest date ignore completed tasks?

Not merely because they are complete. This recipe summarizes dates from all tasks in the selected relation.

Does filtering my task table change the rollup?

A display filter does not remove tasks from the relation used by this rollup.

What if a task has no due date?

Review it in a separate missing-date view. The summary cannot infer its deadline.

Is this the project delivery date?

No. It is a summary of related task dates. Keep the agreed delivery date as a separate field.

How do I see the next unfinished task?

Use a linked task view filtered to this project, unfinished work and non-empty due dates, sorted by Due Date ascending.
